Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky was a Russian Romantic painter and is considered one of the most important marine artists of the 19th century. His works depict impressive representations of the sea in a variety of forms—ranging from calm sunsets to dramatic storms. He repeatedly focused on light effects on the water, which he captured with exceptional precision. Aivazovsky’s art was highly regarded during his lifetime and was recognized by both Tsar Nicholas I and Empress Eugénie. This allowed him to establish connections with high-ranking military figures and gain opportunities to travel, enabling him to depict various naval fleets in his works, including the Black Sea Fleet, the Royal Navy, and the Ottoman fleet.
